Spoke to HMRC and they are adoment that Mum will need to continue with self assessment even though she only receives an uprated state pension. If they decide that 'Tax being Simple' is something that they may want to introduce in the future they will contact us, but it is not something that can be requested. They did say that they could have worked out a payment plan if she could not afford to pay the £600, but as I had already paid this was not an option.

We know what we need to do moving forwards so it really does not matter. It was just a bit of a shock when moving to on account after hitting £1000 tax bill. Thanks again everyone who offered advice. It was Mums Birthday a few days ago - she got £600 from me.

  • Maybe you got a trainee?

Although it may be easier to stick with the system you know 🤔
