So putting two and two together from your 2024 thread, it appears the sole executors ( Solicitors) at some point renounced executorship ( at the beneficiaries request) without having ever intermeddled in any aspect of the administration of the estate.

From what I gather this now leaves a vacuum of executorship which you and other beneficiaries are seeking to fill as replacements.

However, none of you were ever originally appointed under the terms of the will, so it is the Probate Court that will be ratifying your appointment as replacement - see attached article below outlining ramifications of the renunciation process in various scenarios -

As you will see from the article you now have a multi stepped process to navigate, leading to obtaining a Grant of Letters of Administration with Will annexed.

Starting point does indeed seem to be the completion of the paper form PA1P accompanied by the Renunciation ( per box 3.6 of the PA1P) together with the Will etc.

You may find section 7 of the PA1P a bit of of an issue to answer precisely.

With the solicitors presumably out of the picture, can the charities lend their technical expertise to ensure completion of that section does not go awry and trigger a rejection?

Thanks for the link to the article, which seems to concentrate more on an executor renouncing, than those taking on the executorship.

I do appreciate the work involved, having spent three and a half years dealing with my SIL's financial affairs I am well placed to be able to value her estate. There are no children, she only has a property, cash and ISA's so the value is pretty straightforward unless I am being completely blinkered to it. The IHT calculator shows no IHT to pay.

I was in contact with one of the three charities for help, but they were more on the legacy side so assisted as much as they could but assumed we could apply online. Their thinking now is that that may only be available to professionals. I can and will approach the other two charities to see if they can assist, in the meantime, thanks for your input.
