Stuck in job due to car scheme

Have you misunderstood the car allowance option?
Surely it's being on the car allowance for 3 years before then going for a car.
Leaving in the middle of the 3 years on cash is still possible without penalty

I doubt any clause forcing an employee to have any type of private car is legally enforceable.
Probably a strong recommendation of the type of car.

When the employer offers a company car or car allowance, the employer can make it a condition that the car allowance option requires a car meeting certain criteria.
That really sounds very unusual.
Can you share a redacted copy of the policy?

If the car is used for business they do not want a rep turning up in a rusty bucket.
It is a choice to allow the employee to chose his own model of car as opposed to what the company dictates.

yes he can choose but so long as it'it's less than 5 years old and a respectable model. But his choice would be an older car in good condition and a cheaper model to dave himself money. The repayments for the remainder of the private lease are high if he goes down that route. It does seem crazy.

There are far cheaper ways to get a car compliant with those criteria than taking out a private lease.
Do you really mean "lease" (you generally never own the car) or do you mean finance such as PCP?

I used to work for a public utility and one of the local 3rd Engineers apparently ran an old Lada as his vehicle and must have done rather well out of it!
Personally I wasn't of the grade to have a company car and when I went to meetings around the south was obliged to use a pool car, including to meetings with management at our head office around 65 miles away. Shame really as a trip would have paid for my car, which were rust buckets at the time!
What obligation does the OP have to provide a car at all, as the provisions seem a bit one sided from what we have learnt so far?

I think until the OP provides more details of the exact wording of the agreement, redacted of course, we're not going to be able to be much more help.

The choice of car is limited to its age.
It will always have tp comply with the 5 year limit.
Is this a potential new job?
ouIs it a new restriction on an exiting job?

sorry I mean a finance plan, so a monthly payment for 3 years then you either give back or buy it so you then have the option of selling ' previous experience shows us they'they're not worth much due to the high mileage done for work trips. I don'don't understsnd it as I'I've
It's in his contract to have to drive and tthat he must have a car less than 5 years old and of a certain standard.
