There’s something truly rewarding about growing plants from seed.

From the first green shoots to a garden bursting with colour, it’s a wonderful way to fill your garden flowers, vegetables, and herbs.

And at Marshalls Garden, they believe great gardens start with strong
foundations, which means sowing your seeds the right way.

Whether you’re a beginner, or an experienced gardener, their top seed sowing tips will help you give your plants the very best start.

Choose the right seeds for the right place

Read the seed packet carefully. It contains essential information such as the best sowing time, preferred growing conditions, and expected plant size.

Make sure the plants you choose suit your garden’s soil type, sunlight levels, and available space.

For beginners reliable and fast-growing seeds such as lettuce, courgettes, sunflowers, and cosmos are great choices.

Use the right compost

Seeds need a fine, light growing medium to germinate successfully. Always use a good-quality seed compost, such as Westland John Innes Seed Sowing Compost, which is perfect for giving your seeds the very best start in life.

It contains vermiculite to help retain moisture and nutrients, as well
as sand for excellent drainage.

Provide warmth and light

Most seeds need warmth to germinate, which is why spring sowing indoors on a sunny windowsill, in a greenhouse, or in a propagator works so well.

You can create the perfect nursery for your seeds with an electric propagator, such as the Super 7 Electric Windowsill Propagator, which has 7 individual mini propagators with adjustable vents, so you can grow a variety of plants side by side.

The heated base distributes warmth evenly to all your seeds, encouraging quicker germination and stronger root development.

Sow at the right depth

One of the most common seed-sowing mistakes is planting too deeply. As a general rule, seeds should be sown at a depth of around two to three times their own size.

Water gently

After sowing, place in a propagator, close the ventilation holes. Check the seeds daily. Condensation should form on the propagator lid. If the soil looks dry and feels dry to touch, water carefully using a fine rose or a mist spray. This prevents seeds from being washed away or buried
too deeply.

Thin out seedlings

As seedlings germinate increase ventilation and cool the temperature around them to provide the strongest plants.

Remove weaker seedlings to give the strongest plants enough room to develop properly.

!!!!!! out individual seedlings into new module trays to grow on a bit more indoors before outdoor planting.

One lucky winner will have a chance to win a £200 seed sowing bundle .
