One point that occurred to me this afternoon is that branded food is designed to appeal to the widest possible range of palates which means that many individuals/households will find that they prefer another formulation if they do taste tests. So, it's worth trying the available alternatives to see if one of them tastes better to you and, obviously, you should start with the most expensive items.

    May No-Spend Days 3
    May Grocery Challenge Spend £31.18/£186
    May Baking Fund Spend £7.45/£24
May Bulk Buy Fund Spend £18.00/£100

Decluttering 100 items by the end of the month 0/100

Try being A Bit More Nellie
  • I've got better things to do with my time than to start trying numerous alternatives. My shopping consists of buying stuff I've already tried and am happy with. I'm a great believer in finding something that works, sticking with it, ordering it online, then getting it delivered, job done. If the supermarket want me to try something new I probably wouldn't even if it was a free sample.

i put it depends. It really does depend because cant beat a bargain!!!!!!!

There are discounter stores selling near expiring branded goods for bargain prices, then there are supermarkets offering leading deals on brands to get you in store that beat non-branded from the traditional ALDI/LIDL lot.

Supermarket/brand loyalty means nothing now, you shop around and get the best deal.

Best of all, you try to avoid UPFs which appear on most budget branded and even high end branded stuff!!! Sometimes cannot be avoided to keep cost down!

I've just checked my latest SM delivery and, out of the 40 items delivered, found that 10 items were branded - 3 because I prefer them (box of suet, tablet of jelly and a packet of cheese crackers) and 7 because they were on a promotional price that was actually cheaper than the SM versions. The other 30 were SM own brand and included 7 from their Basics range. Overall, I tend to go for SM own brand but am not averse to trying something new (especially if it's an introductory bargain price) that sometimes becomes a favourite and sometimes a 'Well, it was worth a try but never again'.
