"If you were only off 1, 2, 3 or 4 days then the daily rate of £16.96 would apply (the unpaid waiting days will still apply until the new government legislation comes in)"

At the moment it only applies to someone who is off sick Monday - Thursday (or into the middle of a second week) as the first 3 days are not paid SSP anyway and if you're off on Friday you've already indicated that the full 7 days will be paid. The Thursday is the only day that would be paid solely at 1/7th rate, so it seems to me that if they won't switch back to paying 1/5th per day then it'll just encourage people to ensure they take the Friday off as well.

If all 7 days of the week are qualifying days for SSP then days you would not normally work become payable for SSP from April or can count as waiting days at the moment. So if your sickness began on the Saturday and you were not fit for work until the Friday you would have 6 qualifying days of which all six would be payable at 6/7 of the weekly rate ( from April) or 3/7 of the weekly rate at the moment.
