Home Responsibilities Protection

Hi.

On the back of the Martin Lewis Money Show, I helped my 82 year old Mum, who is being treated for multiple myeloma, to apply for missing HRP in July 2025. Despite a number of calls to HMRC, initially confirming in the first call the application had been received (albeit she received an auto email confirming this) and, in a subsequent call, that the form had been completed correctly, it is now over 6 months and still nobody can give a timescale as to when she will hear back.

Is this something that can just languish or are there any timescales that HMRC / DWP should be working to? It doesn't seem fair or reasonable for an elderly, seriously ill person to have to wait for something I believe they have an entitlement to. I feel sure this is unlikely the only case of this nature?

Any help or guidance appreciated

It is reported the timescale for this can be 1 year +, unfortunately processing is a bit like Gringott's Bank - loads of goblins sitting at desks with pens and calculators, not simply push the button on the computer - and the number of goblins qualified / experienced enough to do the calculations is limited. The big question is will it actually make any difference to her pension ? For pre 2010 retirees it reduced the number of years required for a full pension, it did not add years, and there are many who have applied and received nothing as their pension was already in excess of the +HRP amount.
