To the OP, just to manage expectations re: writing to your MP.

My recent experience is that my MP was not able to help in a similar situation. This situation was my elderly relative being unable to create a Govt Gateway account due to no passport and no driving licence and no recent loans or mobile phone contract. I have POA for them and can access their bank account.
My MP wrote to HMRC and they replied with a standard letter about how data security was important
and telling me that it wasn't possible to achieve the outcome that I wanted.
Maybe your MP will get a more positive response than mine did.

One option would be for you to try and use the Trusted Helper service.

I'm a bit surprised your MP (or HMRC) didn't explain that option to you.

According to the letter, my date for filing 24/25 tax return is by 31 Jan 26 if online, or 31 Oct 25 if sending by post or 3 months after the date of notice (whichever is later) - date of letter is April 10 26. So I presume my deadline now is July 10 2026.

I'm entitled to receive my monthly state pension when it becomes due, and not before. Just like with wages you're entitled to them when they fall due. My pension is always paid at a certain time of the month, so I know when it becomes due. So far I've not had HMRC argue with me over this and I paid for 23/24 what I actually received in the tax year. So for the time being I'm happy to stick with that plan.

State pension isn't paid monthly, so it can't always be paid at a certain time of the month!

However, the law is clear about the basis of its taxation, i.e. entitlement accrual, not what was actually paid:

the taxable pension income for a tax year is the full amount of the pension, benefit or allowance accruing in that year irrespective of when any amount is actually paid

Hi, I'm sorry to hear that. It was a long time ago when I did see my MP (mid '80s) Surprisingly I hit it off with him really well despite not sharing his political views. So possibly he went out of his way to help me, but it gave me a very favourable view of him at the time. But I know the quality of MPs varies considerably and generally it's a lot worse now than it ever was back then (in Thatcher's time). I'm sure there are more than a few 'elderly people' in a similar situation to your relative and myself. And so far it's proved impossible for me to communicate with HMRC, which years ago was not the case. I am planning to see my MP in the near future. I've not met him before so no idea what he's like, but I'm not going to be fobbed off easily by him about any security excuse which IMO is a BS one. Eg never had a problem with security registering online with any bank over the years.

I have a government Gateway account number. I even have been given a UTR number (whatever the f*** that is). I just can't login. I no longer have a valid passport and I no longer drive and my driving license ran out years ago. Whether that's what is causing my failure for my login details to be accepted I have no idea.
