Tax return deadline
Hi,
Having worked as a sole trader in November 2025 and December 2025 and earned £7000 please may i confirm that i dont have to do the tax return till January 2027?
Sorry to ask, it just seems such a long time "after the event".

That's correct. Tax year runs April - April, and your return is due by the following January.

You can file the return for 2025/26 any time after the 6th April 2026.
The final date for any payment due is 31st January 2027.0 -
For your own sake I would not leave it until January 27 to actually file. I haven't been on cutting tax this year but the second half of January is usually filled with people with something going wrong with their attempts to file. You should take a look.

Agreed; I filed mine in August or September. And then revised it this month when I remembered some untaxed interest I'd forgotten to add!

If you have anything to pay they expect payment by the 31st

Unless you are on simple assessment, when payment is due either 3 months after notification or 31st January whichever is the latest & is why my payment is not due until mid March this year (April last year).

Hi faringdon
You might find our information on self-employment helpful as it covers when you need to complete a tax return and our guide has a case study explaining the process and questions on the tax return: https://www.litrg.org.uk/working/self-employment and https://www.litrg.org.uk/working/self-employment/self-employment-guide . Hope this is useful.
