What I did:

PPut text

(Leaving the new coding double letters there)

Where it says text in italics above, was meant to be * text * (without spaces)

I appreciate this is how one does italics in whatsapp but in whatsapp if you go back a space it undoes the italics as you've deleted the last asterisk, whereas here it keeps the whole sentence still italicised

What Should happen:

If you go back a space the sentence shouldn't be italicised

It was italicised, and I didnt put either of these sentences in bold, the new coding jumped and actually I can't be bothered anymore, this revamp is a complete mess. Best of luck to you but posting on here is becoming a full time job.

In the old text editor * text * (without the spaces) would make that text bold.

    Hi @PennysIntoPounds

If I'm reading this correctly, the issue is that when you've used markdown to create italics (by adding a star before and after a word), if you then use the delete key, rather than removing the last star - so you can edit more - it seems to get you 'stuck' in italics for the rest of the words?

I'm not sure if this is considered a bug, since the editor creators want to immediately show you what output will look like rather than keeping the * (They want the text in the editor to show you as closely as possible what the output will look like rather than having a separate preview)

While it's not obvious, one solution is to use the popup to un-select italics.

Example of using markdown and the popup

Okay thank you @MSE_Stephen I'll try to get used to that but if they ask for feedback, mine is that's its quite annoying to not be able to unitalicise just by going back one space and getting rid of the last asterisk. I'm in the habit of using * does something * to demonstrate an action as is online parlance in some quarters!

    Thanks @PennysIntoPounds

I think getting into the habit of using spaces for actions might be the best.

For fun I just tested Google Docs, which now allows Markdown (Don't know if it's on by default).
They're using as similar convention. So it might be the way of things now…

I can't work out how to make it stop italicising once it's started! Any advice from anyone and @MSE_Stephen gratefully received

I put text and while it's working here in that example, in my diary it just keeps on being in italics. I went to post a laughing emoji and it was italicised and now I'm going to have nightmares 😂

AAndroid Chrome (why does the forum now do this to the start of sentences? Anyway, different issue 😁)

Hi @MSE_Stephen sorry to raise this again but are you sure it's supposed to be a deliberate feature that once you accidentally put an asterisk next to the last word in a sentence (that started with an asterisk) that it doesn't un-italicise when you go back a space/you can't delete the last asterisk to unformat? It doesn't seem like an improvement, more a coding error that means people just don't bother saying what they were trying to say because it's effort deleting the whole thing then writing it again
