P60 not matching YTD figure on Mar payslip
My husband has left his tax return to the last minute and has just discovered that his Mar 25 wage slip shows £4k higher tax paid in the year than his P60. This means he owes £2k in tax rather than gets a £2k refund if he uses the p60 figure in his return.
Does anyone know why there is a disrepency? His March 25 pay was a couple of days late and paid 3rd April but this would only account for £1.8k of the tax.
Would it be incorrect to use the payslip number in his tax return? The wording on the website seems to suggest it can come from either wage slips or p60s.

Maybe he could look at the PAYE box in his personal tax account and see what tax HMRC think he paid via PAYE for 24/5?
You could also look at earlier payslips and see if there was a typo in the March 25 payslip perhaps?

Are you maybe getting confused between gross and taxable pay? Could any difference be pension contributions taken off before tax?

Thank you. That box in his personal tax accound agrees with his p60. The payslips appear correct though so I don't think there is a typo. They are all generated automatically by Rippling.

Do the salary or taxable earnings figures on the payslip and the P60 tally? Is it possible he had some payment (a bonus maybe) between the March salary payment and the end of the tax year?
I am probably getting into the realms of guesswork here.
I suspect if you don't use the same figure as on the personal tax account then questions may be asked.

Does he have all of his other payslips for the year, to allow summation of the monthly figures for tax paid, which should help identify which of the competing annual figures is more credible?

If you could give the figures involved (taxable gross and total tax and final tax code) we could see which tax figure appears to be the correct one. This might give some indication of what is happening. Apart from this I would suggest querying with payroll dept.
