nhs penalty charge notice

i have a pcn from the nhs for prescriptioons i collected unware my pre paid certificate had expired i am more than happy to pay for the prescription (£19.80 )

but i have also received a fine of £99 and the threat of an extra £49.50 if i do not pay within a month

do the nhs have any right to impose a fine (amount of their choosing )

any advice much appreciated

    Yes.

    Quite a few threads previously on the subject. Afraid it is your responsibility to ensure that the pre paid cert is valid.

    In effect by ticking that you have a pre paid, then you are defrauding the NHS.

    I've just renewed my exemption certificate and it clearly saws on the form that it's my responsibility to ensure that I hold a valid certificate whenever I have a NHS prescription dispensed free of charge. If I claim after the certificate has expired, I could fancy a penalty charge.

    I do sympathise as I didn't realise mine was coming up for renewal. Luckily I got a letter reminding me so was able to apply for my new card and got it before the old one ran out.

  • I believe even ticking the wrong exemption box can trigger a penalty charge, I find using the 10 month direct debit is a safer option.
