Currently going round in circles with HMRC.

Long story short but for the 24-25 tax year my wife earned 64k total of bonus, mileage etc.

We received payment for 2 children. So about 2.1k for the year.

Of the 64k she has paid about 2.5k into workplace pension.

We spoke to HMRC multiple times and because she didn't want to change her tax code and wanted to pay it in one go they told her she needed to register for self assessment.

She has register and started the assessment but somehow even though her PAYE says she paid the right income tax the self assessment estimates she owes 4.2k.

Surely 64k minus pension would only put her 1.5k over the threshold so if its 1% for every 200 sure she only needs to pay max 8% which would be more like £400 than 4.2k.

Where are we going wrong?

Thank you for any help in advance.
