I used to buy Sainsbury own brand...like Birds
This was discontinued and I've used up my supply
Has anyone found a similar alternative please?

How much are you willing to spend per 100g / jar? There's a Nescafé smooth too - but this is probably also more expensive than the Sainsbury's version.luvchocolate said:

Can you not just use half/third of a spoon of a regular instant?1

I think this just makes it weak, not smooth/mild tasting.flaneurs_lobster said:Can you not just use half/third of a spoon of a regular instant?0 -

Try one of the whole bean instants, like Nescafe Azera. They are often on offer for £4 and you could use half a spoon. I find them much smoother than regular (even expensive) instant. If expense is your key consideration, you could also try a coffee machine. We have a £20 tesco one (jug type). The filters are about 3p each. The coffee is rich and more flavoursome but you'd only need half a scoop to make a cup, and Lidl or Aldi (or home bargains) to a pack of ground coffee for under £3; I even got one in HB the other day for £1.89.Problem is, it's expensive to make coffee taste good, and smooth, and be instant, and cheap. You might have to sacrifice one part of the equation1

I don't agree. I am working my way through a 190g jar of Nescafe Expresso powder intensity 7 at breakneck speed, I cannot bear bitter coffee but have struck upon a dose and milk to hot water ratio that works perfectly for me! So am stocking up whilst its on offer in preference to DE (comparable price on offer) or Lidl Bellarom Gold, which is roughly 1/2 the price on offer. When I calculated the incremental cost per cup to be just 3p it justified the extra expenditure. Although I do wonder if its a powder vs granules debate?Emmia said:

The Nescafé espresso is a smooth if strong flavoured coffee, it's one I use if I'm making a coffee cake - I notice that the Nescafé smooth also appears to be in the same powder form - so you might be right on the powder/granules debate.Rosa_Damascena said:

Edit: I looked on Ocado and currently a 190g jar of Nescafé espresso is £12 (£6.32 for 100g) or they've got the smaller 90g size on offer for £4 (£4.21 per 100g)
Nescafé smooth is £7.50 for 190g (£3.95 per 100g)
Mellow Birds (for comparison) is £6.35 for 200g (£3.18 per 100g) - although I think this is a bit more than it sells for elsewhere. I'm sure I've seen it for £4/£5 a jar.
