Short Fill Root Canal

I had this done 4 years ago. About once a year since then, I get a throbbing toothache in that tooth. 3 times it has cleared up after 3 days or so, once I went back to the dentist and he could find nothing wrong. I am currently on holiday in Spain, had the ache for 4 days. Had to go to the dentist who xrayed it and said he couldn’t see any infection or problem again. Meanwhile my tooth is still aching! Any suggestions please?

You really need to get your dentist to investigate things a bit more. You say you've seen him "once" and then you've seen this dentist in Spain.

Both could see nothing obvious with that particular tooth.

As you don't seem to have gone back again when the problem has persisted, then the dentist won't be aware that it is a persistent thing and it is an issue for you.

There are several things it could be and it could even be a different tooth causing the problem. Mouth pains aren't always coming from the place the patient think they are. The nerve that supplies feeling to your mouth can play tricks.

I'm not quite sure what a 'Short fill root canal' actually is? If you mean it's a root filled tooth where the root filling didn't quite get to the end of the root - this could cause a problem, but not always - and I would guess that that's what the dentists you've seen seem to think is ok at the moment.

So just go back, make the dentist aware that this is a persistent problem that is affecting you and get everything assessed and other possible causes looked into as well.

(It's pointless me listing every possible thing that it could be, as the list is very long, and most may not be relevant to you. You need someone who can see your mouth and x-rays)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
