Wholemeal flour

I bought some Bacheldre wholemeal flour at Waitrose and the package says that the fibre content is only 3%. That seems extremely low for wholemeal. Normally it is about 10%.

This is stoneground flour from a small water mill in Wales, so it’s possible that the package is not accurate. I don’t really want to raise the issue with Waitrose.

Any advice please?

Advice about what? Other  than raising it with Waitrose which you don’t want to do, I’m not sure what else you are looking for.

Whether anyone knows whether it really is wholemeal?

A quick Google shows that there is no legal specification for the amount of fibre in wholemeal flour. Wholemeal means that everything is included which tends to me in a higher fibre amount.
    Fromgov.uk
Wholemeal flour is flour made from the whole grain after the milling or grinding of cleaned cereals. This is commonly understood to mean the entire edible grain after removal of inedible parts such as the hull and glume. This includes the germ, endosperm and bran.

Why don't you ask the millers producing the flour? Bacheldremill@aol.com is the email published on the mill website. www.bacheldre.com

    Thanks everyone for your input.

I did email the manufacturer, but I expect they are busy milling…

I attach photos of the packaging as well as the flour inside. It seems strange that they would put different nutrition information on the 1 kg and 1.5 kg packaging, but that seems to be what they have done. I assume the flour inside is the same, and the 9% figure is believable. Also, there are a few errors on their website, so maybe milling is their focus, rather than proofreading. :)

Thanks everyone for helping sort out this puzzle.

Strange! Maybe a typo or a packaging error. Will be interesting to see what they come back with - keep us informed please!
