Claiming mileage expenses - should I?

You can't generally claim travelling expenses to your normal place of work. The employer may be willing to make an ex gratia payment if you ask nicely, but I doubt it. How did you get this kit home in the first place?0

it doesn’t belong to the employer. it’s a sack truck which belongs to the OP which they’ve decided to take into work to make moving something easier.TELLIT01 said:You can't generally claim travelling expenses to your normal place of work. Who's convenience?ButterCheese said:I would not make the expense claim even if I could. You presumably chose to live where you live and work where you work, which includes mileage and a toll in the middle. The fact that your commuting choice is (free) cycling is neither here nor there. If your bike broke and you had to drive in, you would have no case for claiming travel expense if you had to use the car or public transport at your own cost. This (one-off) situation is no different. In my job description it states that I may be required to transport boxes or equipment between home and base, or between sites at my convenience.
Why are you required to conduct the company's business at your convenience?
If they need something moving they should arrange for it to occur.
In the same manner as you doing things at your convenience, this is not about the OP claiming on commuting mileage this is about providing a service, loan of sack trolley and additional labour, to conduct the move that is likely well outside the T&Cs of the contract.
If as employees you try to be amenable you may find problems later on.
