Then it won't have any impact on you as tax code S1196L means you can be paid £11,969 by 5 April 2026 and not pay any tax.waterman10 said:

Do you expect to earn more than £11,969 at your job in this tax yearwaterman10 said:But I shouldn't be taxed as I didn't earn enough in savings interest or in my job.
Hi, my tax code in recent months has been S1236L (I live in Scotland), but on January's payslip it was S1196L. I wondered if anyone can explain to me why it would've changed.0 -
Ok, that's good thanks.
I still don't really understand why they take it off my personal allowance to be honest.0 -
It's so that you can pay the tax due at it arises rather than complete a tax return and be charged in a lump sum.waterman10 said:Ok, that's good thanks.

Sounds like you have too much in savings.
Move some into cash ISAs maybe?0 -
That is often the case but with the op it seems much more likely that they have unused tax code allowances and they are utilised before the 0% tax bands for interest comes into play.pmduk said:

At no point prior to this post did you tell us that your earnings and savings interest were below your personal allowance, so how were we supposed to know that when giving you answers? We're not clairvoyant (well, I'm not, I can't be sure of anyone else...)1 -
We have been hearing of different instances where the figures being used by HMRC for savings interest may be incorrect - have you double checked your savings income vs the tax code adjustment? Even if the incorrect figures do not appear to be impacting on your tax liability right now, incorrect figures in HMRC’s systems can easily cause problems later on.
