Hello,

I woke up to an email this morning from a company called Jacobs saying I had council tax debt of approx £1500 and to contact them to make arrangements asap basically.
Now I have two previous council tax debts which I am slowly paying off, agreed payment plan with the council. However when I checked my payments I realised I missed the payment due by the 26 December, I think with all the Christmas rush it just slipped my mind!
Now what do I do? I am paying £10 a month for each payment to the council.

Any help appreciated 👍🏻

Could you contact the council and see if they will speak to you?

Yes contact the council ASAP, I hope you realize Council Tax is the most vital debt you must pay, it is the only debt you can be sent to prison for.

Do you have other debts? If we can see the full picture we can give you the best advice on what to do.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

How come Jacobs have an email address for you?

Is Jacobs the firm that you were already dealing with?

Are the £10 payments not being made by so/dd?

Phone the council on this one.

Give us an soa on the bigger picture

You are a LONG way from committal proceedings so do not panic or be panicked.

If Jacobs are now involved, the council will confirm and Jacobs will send an oldfashioned letter.

Thanks all, I called and they are actually chasing my ex husband but somehow had my email address 🤷🏻‍♀️.
My payments are up to date and I had made my payment in December which I thought I had missed.
    Panic over for me 😊

What you were advised remains true. You need to make sure this is set up as a standing order, not rely on making payments.

And given how often the end of the month clashes with Bank Holidays, (May, August and December) and sometimes Easter, maybe look for a month when you can "get ahead" and pay earlier, after agreeing with Jacobs. Then alter the SO to pay earlier.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
