over paid tax deductions

I receive NHS pension pay every month and had a second job which was terminated 15 Dec. Checking gov gateway for my tax pay...i noted that £719.16 was deducted in tax (for January) from my NHS pension despite my tax code being 1257l. That being 50% deduction in tax. (normal tax deduction is £78.40 monthly) After several phone calls to HMRC and NHS pension one adviser from HMRC said it was the wrong code for the second job another adviser admitted someone manually input the wrong income figures for my terminated second job...they wouldnt state what was recorded but well above 10K. New tax code since sent to NHS pension 29 Dec. (1257L ...it has always been 1257L)
My total pay for the year is well below 18000
All other details on gov gateway is correct in terms of estimate income for year and estimate tax.
Having phoned up NHS pensions yesterday they looked at future payments and said another £700 tax will be deducted in Feb and £600 in march ???? But could not state the reasons as to why-speak to HMRC
Phoned NHS pensions again today and yes they have received the new tax code still 1257L and looked at future payments to again state £563 will be deducted in Feb and back to 78.40 in March. there will be no refund and that this is down to HMRC
I phoned up HMRC again to day the person could not understand the issue and having spoken to her colleague said that since new tax code it should correct itself and a refund from pension will be made. I stated back to her what NHS pension said as above. I reiterated and said so it is definite i will get a refund and correct tax deducted. I then proceeded to state that due to someone s incompetence of a manual input error this is causing me a lot of financial difficulties and stress. She then proceeded to state she would not listen to my abuse and be called incompetent and terminated the call.. !!
I have made several complaints regards the whole issue. Still waiting for a response and a call
NHS pension advisers have been brilliant. HMRC do they know what they are doing ?
I am at a loss... in financial difficulty...very distressed and not sure which or what to do
HELP

Completely understand the distress - and the sense of utter frustration.Olecia said:I receive NHS pension pay every month and had a second job which was terminated 15 Dec. I wonder if part of the problem is that all this seems to have been done by telephone, which means you are at the mercy of the level of (in)competent of the person you are talking to.
Do you have a personal tax account? Communicating that way might be less infuriating: https://www.gov.uk/personal-tax-accountGoogling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0 -
You might want to check if there is an X at the end of your tax code. If there isn't then the HMRC lady will be right and the tax deduction will correct itself. If there is then the NHS adviser is right and the tax will be worked out on a month by month basis.
But it sounds like your real problem is with the other source of income. Does that not show up on your personal tax account? Don't you have an end of employment form which gives the right figure so you can correct what HMRC have? It is not clear to me if that is an issue which has been sorted out now or not.0 -
If you provide the details from your recent NHS pension payslip and the taxable amount you expect to be paid by the NHS on your next payslip it should be possible to calculate the tax that will be deductedOlecia said:I receive NHS pension pay every month and had a second job which was terminated 15 Dec. Has the code definitely been issued on a cumulative basis, not a non-cumulative one?
Non cumulative might have an X after the code or refer to Wk1/Mth1, W1/M1 or something like that.0 -
The pension will be taxed according to the code issued and the tax tables, there is nothing the pension provider can do about that, so it is something that HMRC have done. What exactly does your on line tax account show for the code in use on the pension ? What does it show for how that code is arrived at ? 50% tax is the maximum amount that can be deducted so I am wondering if the code in use now has a K prefix ?0
