Most likely reason is a change in circumstance, or the correction of a previous overpayment.

There has been no overpayment, or change of circumstance? the only change i can put it down to is my Bank Balance / savings fluctuating, but how would they know if this was the reason? as these are private accounts, i must say the amount it has decreased by is about £1 a Month.

Banks have to report to HMRC on interest paid to customers, so that's how they would know.
