Tax calculation

For some unknown reason my OH has been unable to register for on line tax return, so he has to fill in a paper one every year as he has pension income and bank interest from abroad.    He usually does this in September/October, and about 6 weeks later gets his tax calculation in the post,  but this has not happened this year.

Yesterday he got an e mail thanking him for sending in his return and reminding him of the latest payment date.  Today in the post he got a statement saying how much to pay by when, including POAs, but no calculation of how this figure was arrived at.

The last couple of years he has not received any statements of amounts and when to pay, so he has had just paid what the calculation said.

I like to check that they have used the correct figures, especially for bank interest, and more so for this last year as the amount to pay looks rather large compared to previous years.
Have HMRC stopped sending out tax calculations?    Or should it arrive soon?

  • Did he self-calculate the tax due?

If not, phone them and ask them to send it surely?

No, they always did it before.  Being in the Scottish tax bands it is more complicated, but I usually try to work it out for him, just to get a rough figure.

I did not do it this year as he just went over into a higher band and I was not sure what to do with the gift aid figure, and he also lost the ability to use the 10% of my personal allowance, which we had not realised earlier, so we were expecting a bigger bill.
  • What is this personal tax account thing?  Does he have one despite not being registered for on line returns?   How do we find it?
  • If you are comfortable posting details of what you put in the return (I hope you kept a copy) then there are plenty on here that can do the calculation.
  • We did scan and keep a copy, will need to get him to look for it tomorrow as it is on his laptop, which I have no idea how to use.

Suggest rather than using paper returns in future, your partner invests in third party software to prepare, then ultimately file his tax returns.

The software will calculate the tax due for each payment cycle ( January /July), produce pdf SA100 ( and supplementaries) and SA302 then electronically file (as agent). Scottish tax returns accommodated.

I use GoSimple tax ( others are available), and they have decent online support.

They currently have 20% discount offer, and free trial so you can try before you buy. Which members get a further discount.

Using the software means you are calculating your own tax based on the submissions you make for bank interest etc. I rely on the year end certificates supplied to me by the banks for insertion on my tax returns. Thus far (14 years on) have had absolutely no issues with HMRC accepting my figures and raising assessments on that basis.

Download HMRC's app, it is a great portal for all aspects of personal tax interaction with HMRC including accessing self assessment tax break down figures. I use it on my Android tablet

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/download-the-hmrc-app

Also provides access to NI records and state pension forecasts so a good allrounder.

Apologies for the delay in returning to this discussion, it has been quite hectic recently!   OH has downloaded the HMRC app, various things are on it, but not his tax calculation.     I have tried calculating the tax, but that gave a figure even larger than HMRC say,  so I have given up, if someone can help, here are the numbers that were submitted……..

    State pension………..12817

    Work pension…………27735

Pension from abroad… 5217  ( no tax deducted at source)

    Bank interest……….……744

    Gift aid….………………..772

    UK tax paid……………,5381

    Scottish tax rates are here…….

    https://www.gov.uk/scottish-income-tax/2024-to-2025-tax-year

I think the Gift aid is where I am going wrong.

Is the Gift Aid of £772 the gross amount, including the basic rate relief the charity got or the net amount?
