I currently go to a Nuffield gym. I like it, it’s clean, friendly and has a leisure pool, a sauna and a steam room.  I pay for a personal trainer - which makes sure I go.  It’s awkward to get to by public transport even though it is only 3 miles away.  I’m happy to cycle in the summer but in the current dismal weather I drive.

Costs keep going up, so I am considering the local council gym, much the same equipment, a full length pool and an egym. It’s also easy to get to - cycle, walk or bus.

I would save maybe £30 or £40 a month on membership, nothing on a personal trainer.  For that amount I’d rather have the comfort and cleanliness of the facilities at Nuffield and the trainer I know.  Last time i looked at the council place (well over 6 years ago) it was a tad grubby in the pool area and the changing facilities were Spartan. No sauna or steam room. So the major saving would only come from ditching personal training and using the egym instead.  There’s a Puregym even nearer but it’s only opened recently and I have no idea what it is like, monthly cost not a lot different to the council place.

Has anyone used an egym?  Are they good? I’m not aiming to run a marathon or win strong woman of the year just want to maintain my fitness as, apart from the cycling, I’m pretty sedentary.

Maybe I should add that driving is an issue - the car is 15 years old and I have no intention of replacing it, since I no longer need one and actually only do about 1500  miles a year.

I've never used an egym but my local council gym has tecnogym equipment with on demand rainer guided workouts and an app to monitor activity etc. whether it's effective depends on how motivated you are to go - does having a trainer in person motivate you to turn up?

Personally I'd look at your lifestyle generally, can you become more active in your daily life - more walking for example to work, the shops or just for leisure, rather than just relying on gym sessions. I do 10,000 steps a day minimum. My daily commute involves a 35min walk (by choice, I could get public transport almost all the way to work).

Why not go & have a look at the council gym - a lot can change in 6 years!
