Hi I recently applied for the council tax band deduction.
basically it me my disabled wife and older daughter who is also disabled so we could live in a 2 bedroom house but due to my wife’s disability she has 2 brain tumours Epilepsy bad arthritis and fibromyalgia she is in constant pain and discomfort and her sleeping is not good she also eats her meals in her bedroom and 99% of time she spends in her bedroom im her carer and cannot share not sleep in her bedroom as I would not be able to sleep and get any rest so we had to get a 3 bedroom house Universal Credit recognised why we need a 3 bedroom instead of of 2 but council tax has denied it even though I have said we could live in a 2 bedroom if it wasn’t for her disability and we then would pay less rent an probably less council tax I font feel this is right.
thanks Dave

I think your application fails because you don't need an extra bathroom or kitchen. The council would probably argue that in their opinion a) your wife's disability is not so severe that she needs a room of her own and b) you could always sleep in the lounge.
I would see if your local councillor can intervene on your behalf and it may help if you can get something in writing from her doctor/clinician to support your claim. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales1 -
Hi her disability is severe enough she gets hi rate mobility and middle rate care DLA and no council should expect me to sleep in the lounge permanently I also found this on gov website

That is the site I took my info from.
This is from the Disability Rights UK website and no mention is made of a bedroomCouncil tax disability reduction scheme
You can get a reduction on your bill if you or someone in your home is ‘substantially and permanently disabled’ and one of the following applies. You (or they):
- have a room (other than a bathroom, kitchen or toilet) which is used to meet your needs e.g. for the purposes of dialysis, treatment or for the storage of equipment
- have a second bathroom or kitchen used to meet your needs
- have enough space in your home to use a wheelchair indoors
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
