Writing to creditors individually
Comments

Ok I have gone through it again @Grumpelstiltskin . The £418 is kids clubs and sports, I have reduced this slightly as we don't need to pay for one of them anymore, and written it in as kids clubs. Have added for presents. Entertainment is £40 a week for the weekend - so maybe lunch in a cafe, or entrance to something.

this year husband (business owner) has only been able to pay himself £1000 per month, where it should be £2000 per month.
is this a temporary downturn or likely to continue?
The groceries amount at £400 looks implausibly low0 -
Your unsecured debts are not your problem. You are £400 short of making regular monthly expenditure and secured debt.
I take it the secured debt is a secured loan on the house. If it is something else, you might have options.
But as things stand you have to find £400 more income or reduce expenditure £4000 -
Thank you so much both of you - @ManyWays I think it will continue like that for a while, at half the amount. Groceries we try to stick to £85 a week - the business debtline said they thought it was too low too so I put it up to £100 to cover occasional top up shops:
it’s really helpful to have these comments - thank you @fatbelly for summarising it like that, sometimes it’s too hard to see the wood for the trees0 -
Well done for posting and taking the first steps to dealing with this.
I agree that it’s always best to get the debt position out in the open with your partner. I would also urge you to consider how the debt was accrued, this is important as it’s likely to mean lifestyle changes.
If your partner was aware of the shortfall in household income, would he have scope to increase his income from the business?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pension, Debt Free Wanabee, and Over 50 Money Saving boards. I think your husband needs to rethink this business and consider getting a job that pays more than 1000 a month.
Another option is to end literally all the childrens clubs and halve the entertainment and pay NOTHING to any of the unsecured debts.
when does your current mortgage fix and who is the mortgage lender?
0 -
@ManyWays yes I have told him this!
Is it sensible for me to write to creditors individually and ask them to freeze interest? does that get recorded on my credit file?
Mortgage is with NatWest and fix ends 31/3/20270 -
You will have no problem remortgaging with Nat West, there will be no credit check, just don't try anywhere else.
Forget your credit file, the sooner the debts default the sooner the 6 years they will affect your file starts.
You are not going to be trying for new credit. If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -
As a starting point, you HAVE, yes shouting, to make sure that your income covers your expenditure. It appears that this has not been the case for some time? Sorry to be mean but you both need to get a handle on this situation.
You can't afford the massive electricity bill, nor all the kid's clubs. Either one of you increases your income urgently by £500 or you have to cut that all back.
There's no £40 for a meal out, or for carry out lattes, Gregg's on the way home either. That's just to afford to live within budget.
What exactly is the secured/HP debt for? Cars, previous consolidation?
What's the high petrol cost about? Either of you driving for work and not billing the cost to you business? Ditto, either of you using personal bank products to pay for stuff for your businesses?
Your SOA needs to include the value of the HSBC overdraft.
With respect to the debts, does hubby have his own as well? For each debt value, APR, payment, end date of an deal, and end date of the loan.
Plus if any of the debts are his or joint. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing1 -
@ras yes this has been the case for about a year...the trouble is every month we think there will be enough to pay properly (my husband is one of 3 directors) and then there just isn't enough. The business should be wound up imo however the main director has his own house etc against the borrowing.
Secured debt is previous debt consolidation.
Petrol cost is high as my husband's work is 30 miles away, and he cannot wfh.
We are going to cut the kid's clubs right down from next month (all paid up for this month and we have to give notice)
I am trying to keep food costs right down too, I was told £85 a week is too low but that is what we try to stick to - last week was £70 but the week before was £95. We are now shopping at Lidl.
I'm just not sure whether writing to all the creditors to ask for the interest to be frozen is sensible?0
