It's going to become more popular in the higher education sector.  I believe Solent are planning on terminating everyone's current employment and transferring them to new contracts without LGPS or TPS.  Lots of other post-92 universities are considering pension arrangements for new staff, stopping access to the DB schemes.

1946, or 1977, or 2005 depending on what date you pick from its history:

  • As I understand it, pre-1992 the polytechnic staff were not eligible for USS, but were mostly in TPS or sometimes LGPS,  which are more generous schemes (but the salaries were generally quite a bit lower).  This largely carried on as-was after 1992.  The snag now is, the employer costs for TPS/LGPS are nudging towards 30%, compared to about 17% for USS,  so there is a strong incentive for the post-92 univs to shut off these schemes.
