Bad credit rating for not returning a router

Can anyone offer advice please?
My step child has been saving for a deposit on a house and working hard. They have just applied for a mortgage though and discovered that he has a bad rating.
They had an Internet agreement which they had to leave early and so paid off the requested amount but in the chaos of moving etc didn't return the £40 router to the company which seems to have resulted in a black mark and being denied a mortgage from.any of the high street lenders.
Is there anything that can be done to help him?
Thank you for any help.

  • What exactly does the credit report say?

The 'black mark' could be any number of things.

What exactly does it show on his credit file, missed payment, default or something else?

You need to check all the CRAs.

How long ago was this issue?

Has to be far more to this than a single marker for not returning a router.

Given they moved did they have mail redirection in place? As company will have been chasing & taken it to court & a CCJ has been issued.
They need to check their credit files (ignore the number given, it means nothing)

Presumably it will be a default for £40?

    When was the default registered?
    Has it been satisfied?
What is the LTV? (If unsure, do you know purchase price and deposit)?

If the default was registered last month, and they are looking for a 95% mortgage, its going to be a tough ask on the high street and will likely need a little building society. If it is 85% and the default is 3 years old, I reckon they will have a much better chance of high street.

Probably one for a broker, but if you can answer the questions above, I can let you know if it is likely to be possible or not.

Those broadband routers are not £40. Probably more like £400

I’d guess this was a router provided by a previous broad band provider. Given their bulk buying power and the fact that it wasn’t new, the value of a used router is probably more in line with £40. Doubtful the broadband provider is using the same routers nowadays and it would likely have ended up in the recycling centre.

BT ask for £50 if the router is not returned.

I had this same issue. I didn't return the router when cancelled installation (forgot) and eventually did send it back but they'd passed it to Lowell who still chase £50 even though i haven't got the router.
