All it needs is the power to go down somewhere to find out that cash still has its uses. Local supermarket the other day was cash only for most of the day. or on a larger scale the power outage in Spain back in April. I always carry some  cash with me, just in case.
Cash got us dinner in Barcelona back in April, brea,d cheese & chocolate from a darkened corner shop.
I had cash ready for the taxi to the airport the next day, but power was back by then so paid by card instead.

What are other people keeping and when do they finally relax and throw it away.
I keep everything important.  All paperless with pdfs retained.   All bank statements going back to 1988.   All credit card statements, utility bills etc.     The good thing about electronic storage is that it doesn't matter if the items will see the light of day again.   They are not in the way, so there is no point in deleting them even though the odds of needing them are tiny.

I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.

Doesn't the server room get annoying?  :D

So I really hope you’re wrong.

There's a good chance I will be, as I also predict that no-one will eat animal produce by 2100. We'll need a 20 something to bring this back up and declare me crazy or the next Nostradamus, who was probably a bit crazy.

    I doubt that.

Maybe but everything that could have been imagined 75 years ago regarding today would have been doubted.

    Cash isn’t going anywhere.
Most of my older and some of my younger customers ask to pay me in cash.  If it’s for more than £250 I will ask for bank transfer but I don’t mind cash, I can then pay for fuel and materials at my merchants with it, handy when payment systems are down.
My clever Wife created a ‘virtual’ cash bank account in my accounts software so everything is properly accounted for .
We lose cash, we lose our autonomy.
HM Gov have enough information on us,  they don’t need to know where we spend every penny.

I have zero paperwork for environmental purposes. Certainly not for pensions but some things are unavoidable.
I bet some of you still use cash.
    It’s 2025.
Having recently needing to deal with estate of my mother-in-law who had money all over the place but also had advanced dementia then I can tell you that holding everything on-line is great, if you're happy that no-one else will ever need to help you or deal with it when you are gone that is.

Using cash alongside other payment methods is a bad thing? Try being in a car park with no Wi-Fi signal and your phone not working. For example.
Indeed or when I had a little break in the Lake District and stopped at a cafe for a drink and a snack.  Their card machine wasn't working due to the Wi-Fi/4G reception whereas for myself and my friend who had cash we could stop there.  I like to carry both cash and card to give me more choice.
