Couple years ago set up GG accounts for spouse and me. We both live outside UK. Mine still works, but it's rejecting her authenticator code. Seems to be no way to relink authenticator to the account (without logging in via Authenticator). You can chose forgot password but this prompts fo ID check using current UK documents (which she does not have and which, strangely, she did not have when she registered in the first place). Site says without that that's the end of you using online services forever as they cannot reset it over phone. Am I missing some way round this dead end?

  • I believe it's possible to open a GG account without a UK passport or driving licence. The process requires the applicant to answer questions about their credit record or self-assessment record.
GG is being replaced over time by GOV.UK One Login.

You can indeed open one without UK passport or driving license. Problem is you can't reset a password on an existing one without those two things (though I'm not sure resetting password would relink authenticator anyway - is there even a way to reset an existing authenticator?).  You can also set up GOV.UK One Login without those things by using the identity app. However, this is no use since while it successfully identified her it says her details are locked to the old Government Gateway account. I'm trying to work out if best approach to them is to ask how too rest password on GG, or to ask how to migrate Gateway account to GOV.UK account. I'm thinking the latter has more chance, esp as she has successfully authenticated on it. (I don't quite understand why, given they are satisfied it is her, they will not let her view records)
