Debt Company Issues

Recently moved into a property in August, with outstanding utility bills being addressed to myself and co-tenant from June. We were told by power company to ignore the letters as they were faulty however this then resulted on us getting handed over to debt company, who rectified part of the issue and managed to get a correct bill which has been paid.

Despite this there are outstanding bills from June + July to which i have given them the landlords details (Both Utility company and Debt company). They are now spamming me with phone calls etc, however these bills aren't mine and due to the misleading information i received i am disputing the debt collectors fee as well.

I'm just a student so am unsure if I am handling this correctly but I have a file of all the emails as well as recorded all phone calls etc, as really don't want this to hurt my credit score.

I've paid the bill period we were responsible for however by my understanding it is now the landlords problem.

Thanks Everyone!

Correct. You can't be liable for energy used before your tenancy started, though Debt Collection agencies may be slow to catch on ( they are a bit dim)

Ignore texts and phone calls but if you get a letter before claim, post again.

You could make a complaint to the Energy Ombudsman about them

So what is the start date of the tenancy agreement? Thats not the date you moved in but the date the contract you signed started from?

Did you contact the utility company when you moved in to transfer the account into your name?

I remember from my student days at least one agency wanted our agreement to start in July with us to move into it in August but we refused and only signed to be responsible from the end of August.

Point of note, debt collectors cannot add fee`s or charges to any debt, unless the original agreement allows them, as a 3rd party, to do so.

When a debt is sold all rights and privileges continue with the new owner, but this does not extend to any 3rd party collection agent, if they adds fee`s or charges to a debt, they will most likely be unenforceable, and you should refuse to pay such charges.
