Reclaim tax on lump sum contribution

OH has recently made a lump sum contribution to the Civil Service Alpha pension scheme. He's been told by the scheme administrators that he will need to claim the tax back via a tax return. Given that it's several months until the end of the tax year, and it's a five figure sum to reclaim, is there anyway of putting a claim in earlier than waiting until after 5th April next year?
TIA

He shouldn’t have to complete a tax return. He’ll need proof of the payments but can claim from HMRC direct.

A quick question on this. If I make two in-year claims on contributions to my SIPP, if asked to complete a self-assessment at year-end, presumably there's something on the return where I inform them that I did make SIPP contributions but that additional tax relief has already been claimed?0

If the online option takes him down a rabbit hole he could just write a letter to HMRC including all the details listed on the webpage. That’s how I did it a couple of years ago.Slinky said:molerat said:He's tried this, but gets taken down a route asking for net pension contributions for the year, whereas he has made a gross contribution, so we're not getting very far.Any other suggestions please?
Sometimes the analogue option is the easiest 😊1 -

Did you do this before tax year end? How long did it take for them to get back to you about it?Make £2026 in 2026

Yes, I claimed before the year end. From memory it took about six weeks for them to get back to me but I know they’re a bit slower these days.
Pretty sure they asked for bank details and paid it straight into my bank account.

I submitted a claim on 6th November for some SIPP contributions I'd made over the previous three months. I got the tax code change through today, so in just three weeks which I consider quite efficient.1
