I'm a bit unsure of current employment conditions. I've just heard this government is getting rid of zero hours contracts. Does that mean there is no longer casual work if you DO want it? Also is it true that there is no longer a trial/probation period when taking on someone new? I have just heard this and wondered if that's affecting businesses being understaffed because the employer can't really say not worked out because of more employees rights? Vicious circle. Can someone in the know confirm please? Thank you.

Anyone can be dismissed without reason during the first 2 years of employment. But any employer should check out "protected characteristics" before considering dismissal.
"Probation" is not mentioned in employment legislation.
Casual work does not have to be a zero hour contractIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales2 -
Where did you hear this, and how reliable is the source ?
At present the official government website features pages of information and guidance on 'zero hour contracts' , and I can;t spot anything that suggests that they are getting rid of them.

Ok thanks. It's just what I heard at my work. Just thinking about my own situation.0

This is probably in reference to the Employment Rights Bill which has been making its way through Parliament for the last year, it's completed 3rd readings in the Commons and the Lords and now appears to only have 2 stages left, Consideration of Commons Amendments and Royal Assent, so is likely to become law before too much longer. I'd suggest that you refer questions to your trade union, and if you don't have one, join now.2

The above link is what's in the Employment Rights Bill, most of the big changes won't take effect until 2027. The current drafting gives those on zero hours the contract for the option of a minimum guaranteed hours but by agreement you can still be on a true zero hours... obviously the devil is going to be in the detail of how this works and ensures people arent forced into agreeing zero hours.

1. No the proposed Legislation will not ban true casual work, what is will ban in people being keep on agency / ZHCs for years on end often working full time hours
2. no such thing in law asa Probationary period - you can dismiss for any resason not Protected by other legislation ( e.g. Equality Act) within the first 2 years of employment at present
there are a lot of far right agitators telling lies aobut the current governments Employment law position and position in NI and income tax becasue it impedes their ability to either be absolute gits to workers or means they might have to pay their fair shre1 -
AIUI they new legislation will introduce one, as it is doing away with the 2 year waiting period for full employment rightsEnPointe said:JLMartin said:
