Mobile Phone Replacement

Hi, not been here a while.  My elderly mum needs a new phone.  Mine is Motorola G14 and she likes mine.  I've had mine 2 years.  The most similar I have read is g24.  I don't want to pay more than £100.  Argos had one but not in stock or for delivery in my area.  I only have a week before her birthday. Also it has a supplied charger which is important.  Can't be sure on Amazon not renewed or refurbished. Don't want that.  Anyone else know how I can get one quickly? Thank you.

The successor to your G14 is the G15, currently £140 at Argos.

Better value (today) is the G35 at £100

There is generally no charger included with new phones as they can use any USB lead and plug adaptor.

The G24 is an outlier in that respect, it does come with a charger confirmed on the Motorola UK website.

It's just that she currently has Apple iPhone6 which is old.  We can't afford Apple anymore so moving to Android which probably affects the charger she has?

cex has a lot of used/reconditioned phones which might get you something better than you expect at a reasonable price.  They also have phone cords and plugs which will be suitable for an android for about £2 total.  Ikea also sell these new quite cheaply.  Assuming you have either one of these conveniently close to you of course....

Unlikely if the charger has a USB outlet which has been the standard for many years.  Most phones need a charger with a 5W to 15W output, the phone will take what it wants so if a low output charger it will take forever to charge - my new phone charges much quicker on my old charger than the phone it came with did.

Not all apple apps are available on Android, and although there are similarities, there are differences in the operating systems. Switching between the two may not be straightforward.

She'll need at least a different charging cable as android phones don't have lightning ports, and I'd expect even if you had an iPhone again you'd be on less than iPhone 15.

What's your budget? There's reconditioned iPhone 12 mini's on Amazon for ~£150. I had an iPhone 12 for work until 4 months ago when there was an unfortunate incident involving a kettle bell, necessitating it's replacement. It worked absolutely fine up to that point.

Interesting thread as I have an android phone and may need to find a replacement at some time.

On @Emmia's point, what does your mum use her phone for? Would she miss any Apple apps? 🤔

She uses news, WhatsApp, likes to play wordle.  Look things up, take some photos on holiday.  I changed mine from Apple iPhone 6 to Android G14 so have good idea changing over.  Mine came with a charger though and it doesn't seem standard any more to include them.  I wanted similar phone to mine so not too hard to set up and go through with her.  I don't want to pay more than £100.

Ultimately though it's your mum's phone... What does she want?

If she takes photos, does she save the photos on her phone? If so will she want them moved to her new phone?
    Same with whatsapp message.
[Edit] It may be possible to move data from an Apple phone to an Android phone, but not sure. You would need to look it up.

It may not be wise to order a phone from an internet only retailer. Based on a few posts on here, there are tales of phones being ordered and empty boxes arriving. The retailer denies all responsibility. You could do this and video the box being opened just incase, but that would require 2 people and maybe some disappointment if there is no birthday present.

I have ordered from John Lewis and used Click and collect to collect the phone from the store. Is that a possibility for you? Also for a further £30, John Lewis technical staff will setup the new phone with data from the old phone (where possible). For example a few years ago, it was not possible to move data from an Android phone to a new iphone.
I mention John Lewis as they have a few phones under £100.
