PAYE non tax refund this year- not working anymore

I was made redundant in June, and at 53, I have decided to take early retirement. I filled in the correct form for a tax refund, since I won't be working anymore, and was hoping for a substantial refund, possibly before the end of this tax year, but I received a letter back to say to apply again after new tax year🙄
No reason why on the letter.
So now , I will have to wait possibly another year before a payment?
Would phoning them make any difference, or should I possibly apply for self assessment to get it quicker next tax year?
Thanks

I guess they want you to wait in case you get another job this tax year.
Self assessments are currently being done for 24/5 not 25/6. I doubt there is even a form to fill in for 25/6 yet.0 -
Yeah, I meant start a self assessment next tax year for a refund, which might be faster than waiting until next October for a refund using p50 form again0

Did you want the requisite time before sending the P50?CRAIGSVILLE1 said:Yeah, I meant start a self assessment next tax year for a refund, which might be faster than waiting until next October for a refund using p50 form again
Have you checked your Personal Tax Account to see if your former employer has submitted your final pay details with the information from your P45?0 -
Yep, didn't apply for refund until well after the 4 weeks requirement after employment ended, and on HMRC app, says my employment had ended in June + no current employment income in another section.

I would be inclined to call (8am sharp apparently avoids the worst of the queues) and ask what the problem is as they should at least be able to provide a proper explanation.CRAIGSVILLE1 said:Yep, didn't apply for refund until well after the 4 weeks requirement after employment ended, and on HMRC app, says my employment had ended in June + no current employment income in another section.1 -
