Ask an Expert is a time‑limited community Q&A where we invite a specialist - such as an energy, mortgage or consumer‑rights expert - to answer questions from MoneySavingExpert Forum members.

We announce the topic, open the Ask an Expert board for questions, then curate common themes so the expert can reply publicly for everyone’s benefit.

Once the window closes, the full Q&A remains on the Forum to read, revisit and share. Important: Responses are practical and impartial, but they’re general guidance, not one‑to‑one advice or regulated financial advice.

Expert: Oli Townsend - Assistant Deals & Features Editor has been a fixture of MoneySavingExpert.com since 2015. If his face is familiar to you, it may be that you've seen one of the myriad MSE videos he's presented. He's also a veteran of the radio waves, having been interviewed about MoneySaving matters on various national and regional radio stations. In other words, this is someone who knows his stuff.

January 2023 saw MSE Forum's third Ask An Expert event, this time themed on scams. Our resident scams guru MSE Katie took on MSE Forumites' questions, including how to tell if a crypto platform is legit and what to do to get your money back if you've been scammed.
