Bad Debts

Hi all,

HELP! i am desperate!

My rent fell short this month as DWP/housing didn't pay the rent saying  "got paid twice this period". Now my Landlord/Housig Association is chasing me for the balance as I'm already in debt from a previous, long time before now, and threating me with immediate eviction.
I'm old and I suffer with mental health issues so this is the last thing I want to worry about..I've been searching MSE for loans in the hope I can get a small loan to pay them but, alas, no luck so far!!!
Any idea, anyone? I need to find the balance asap and the housig association doesnt want to help - I have asked them for help however their account department is ruthless and doesn't want to kinow about my problems.  I envy council tenants who have a lot more reliance them us housing renters.
Thank you for taking the time for reading this.

How far behind are you in total?  This is a material factor in HA threats to evict.

The best thing to do is to look to see what little extra you can pay them.  Even if it's £5 a week to show willing.

Eviction cannot happen "immediately".  It has to be done in a legal fashion and that takes time.  I would suggest you talk to Shelter as they are the best people to advise with situations such as yours.  They are likely to get you to also contact the council as IF there is an eviction the council will become responsible for housing you.  But that will only happen once you are forced into homelessness and is unlikely to be a great place, most likely a hostel or a cheap B&B.  But you need to jump the various hoops to get on their waiting list.

I'm not surprised you couldn't find a loan to help you through.  If you already have some debts you would be a risk to any creditor so they are right to turn you down.  So you need to think of other sources - do you have an career links to any unions or a particular industry?  Some have grants available for crisis situations.  Likewise military associations, church groups etc.  Try to think of who you know (group wise, not individuals) and how they might help.  Come back and ask if you need help searching online for some group in particular.

Looking back at OP's previous thread it looks like they were in arrears with their rent last year.

OP What have you done since then to reduce them?

Do you have any unsecured debts you are paying?

If so have you stopped paying them as rent is vital to be paid.

Are you receiving all the benefits you are entitled to?
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.
  • When it says you got paid twice this period, is this wages? Are you paid four weekly?

Can you just explain a little more about what income you receive, work/pensions/benefits etc.

Are they saying you got paid twice in one monthly assessment period, which is why your universal credit wasn`t paid?

Is that correct? were they right in that assessment?

We really need more detail, as I don`t think a loan is the answer to your problem.
