P50 refund

I applied for a P50 refund on the HMRC government gateway at the end of May 2025 for tax year 25/26.  This is because I lost my job in April 2025 and do not expect to return to work for the foreseeable.
After chasing I got a letter from HMRC PAYE advising I would shortly be receiving a payable order for a few thousand.  The letter was dated September 16 2025 and it also enclosed a P50 form which they said I should return if my situation had not changed in 4 weeks.
I have today (October 20)still not received the payable order and am concerned. Is this normal? I spoke to them 10 days ago and they confirmed it had been sent to my home address (same as original letter). Should I hang on a bit longer? Does anyone know why it would take so long?

  • To clarify the enclosed P50 was because I am entitled to an additional
refund if my situation is still the same.

I would have thought the P50 (or is it a P52?) for a possible further claim would have probably been sent at the same time as the refund so I would say you have left enough time now and should chase this up.

  • Thanks for the above.  The P50 was actually printed on the reverse of their letter dated 16 September. I was asked to fill it in and return along with parts 2 and 3 of the P45. So, in addition to the first payment I'm waiting for, there is now a request in the post for a 2nd payment...

I did speak to someone at HMRC today but he could only say payment has been sent.  Frustratingly, they don't seem to have visibility over whether the payable order has actually been posted. He did suggest requesting a new cheque but warned that would take at least another 6 weeks minimum.  I have decided to wait another few days rather than go down this route.  It seems madness that payable order for thousands are not sent by BACS or by recorded delivery.

I thought I would do the right thing and claim back tax before requesting any benefits to which I may be entitled but I'm now regretting not waiting for the auto-reconciliation at tax year-end. Very frustrating as process was initiated at end of May and I could really do with the money!
