Can I 'feed' a shop-bought fruit cake?

Options
Un-iced christmas cakes are 75% off in M&S at the moment. They're very nice so I've bought two. The best before date is the end of March, but could I make one keep longer by feeding it whisky? I'd only want it to last a couple more months, but the labels says not to freeze it.

cheers,

  • I'd do it! It's only a best before date anyway, not a use by. It's never going to kill anyone. Just make sure it's well wrapped in a layer of greaseproof and 2 layers of foil and keep it in an airtight container.

Yes, I'd try it too ;) It's bound to improve it no end. Why on earth they say not to freeze is beyond me  I freeze any kind of cake.
  • Why would you want to freeze a fruitcake? That would just take up valuable freezer space unnecessarily!! My fruitcakes live on top of the kitchen cupboards in tins waiting for their next injection of Tesco value brandy.

BTW, when the alcohol doesn't soak in anymore and just sits in a puddle on top of the cake, it's time to stop feeding it!;)
