    It good practice anyway, as you may have an old debt, but it is too long since you paid for the creditor to be able to force you to pay.

    In Scotland the debt is extinguished after 5 years. In England it still exists and the creditor could try to take you to court, but your defence is that it is "statute barred". If you don't defend the case, they can get the CCJ, so it pays to know.
