Debt letter for Shop direct(carval) but it's not on my credit file.

Can anybody help me with this please?
So I keep receiving letters from ACI saying they've been asked to collect a debt on behalf of Capquest. It states the debt is for £699.73!
I don't know what this is for or when I'm supposed to have racked up this debt. It says it was originally from Shop Direct (carval) I know they are to do with catalogue's but I've not had a catalogue acc for and 16 years. They are threatening to send somebody to my home.
This debt is not on my credit file so how do I find out if it's statue barred without acknowledging it's my debt?
It's stressing me out to be honest.
Please help, thank you.

Send them the standard prove-it letter, sure there is a template you can use somewhere on here.0

Ok thank you. I will have a look for it. I'm just scared of any contact in case they take it as acknowledgment of the debt.0

Hi, that's the point of the prove it letter- it is carefully worded so as to not admit liability0

Getting demands for payment out of the blue can be distressing for some people, but try not to let it upset you.
Old debts are bought in bulk by these companies, sometimes the accounts have scant information attached to them, a partial name, few lines of an address maybe.
So these companies go on fishing trips to try to net the debtor, they write to those with similar names in certain postcode areas, in the hope of a hit, now it might well be an old debt of yours, or it may not, the prove-it letter is specifically worded so as not to acknowledge anything, and should be the only response you give them.
Are they threatening to send Verify or Resolvecall to your door?
They are nothing to worry about, they have the same rights as the postman or anyone else that knocks on your door, the letters they send are engineered to get a quick response out of you, by instilling the fear of a doorstep collector if you don`t engage with them, all quite old hat nowadays to be fair, they are not bailiffs and can`t do diddly squat.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards.
