IHT and 2nd marriage

Is it possible to inherit IHT nil-rate bands from more than one spouse?

Say my spouse and I have a home worth 500k and another 1m in cash and other assets. My NRB is £325k and RNRB is £175k. If my spouse dies leaves me everything I’ll double those to £650k and £350k respectively.

If I remarry and he also dies leaving me everything, do I get another set of NRBs, taking my allowances to £975k and £525k?

You can, but the maximum that can be claimed is still equal to one transferable NRB and one transferable RNRB.
You would only need to do it if both spouses had used up some of their NRB.

You could make full use of all three by using up the NRBs on the 1st and / or 2nd deaths, but not if every thing is left to the surviving spouse both times.

Only if you started planning this during the first marriage 😈

🤣 I’m not a black widow, honest. As a lifelong singleton I’m just contemplating the benefits of marriage for tax purposes.
