I could not get through the 0800 number so called the Welling club in SE London/Kent, they said that I still would have to pay a membership fee first, that was £84 on joining, and then I would be able to do the free month and then the monthly payments would kick in. No way I am going to fork out £84 in advance for something that is supposedly a 'free trial!

The same happened to me Caterina. I phoned my local Curves as there was an error on the other number - the woman I spoke to seemed unsure about the offer but then assured me it was a free trial or 'one month free when you join' and thought these were the same thing. I was having doubts so phoned up just before I left for my appointment - spoke to a different woman who said no I'd have to pay the joining fee to get my free month. Pah! Told her thanks but I won't be bothering with my appointment!0 -
I went 4 times last week (my local one isn't open at weekends) and will go 4 times this week too.
All the Curves seem to have different rules - the one I use (Uxbridge) doesn't seem to be as rigid as some of the others mentioned here and they didn't try and get a joining fee out of me, although they did say that if I used the voucher I wouldn't qualify for their current promo of 66% off the joining fee. That was fine by me as I wanted to try it and see if I liked it.
I figured that was the point of the free trial?!
They're keen for me to join afterwards though
For anyone who hasn't been able to use the free voucher, I would try complaining to the main Curves number ( IF you can get through!), or the magazine you got the voucher from, or even try emailing the Curves head office in the US. Good LuckBest win ever: Trip to the Galapagos Islands in 20100 -
Hi Guys,
Thought I would chip in as I work at a Curves!! (employee, not owner)
[NB. I am not speaking as an official representative of Curves, these are my personal views/advice]
OK I haven't seen this specific offer (I'll try and have a look at one of the mags tomorrow) but to clarify,
Caterina & Moonberry: nationally there is currently an offer on of 30% off the joining fee and first 30 days free - I would assume that the person you spoke to was unaware of the magazine offer and was thinking that this was the offer you were referring to - I would suggest that you contact them again and make it clear that this is a specific magazine coupon/offer (please check the offer does not have small print specifying you have to join for a specific 4 or 12 month period to qualify)
princesspoppypop: yes, we recommend that you work out on our circuit 3 times a week (no more no less). This is because the workout focuses strongly on strength/resistance training and it is recognised that when doing muscle work it is preferable to give the muscles recovery time between workouts. However you are paying for 'free access' to the gym you join so you can visit as often as you like, at our club we are more than happy to show you how to focus more on the cardio aspect of the work out on 'additional' visits should you wish to visit 4, 5 or even 6 times a week!
As to it being 'restrictive' in what you can do - well yes, if that's how you want to put it. I would say it suits some but not all - if you are happy with and have the time to spend at a 'standard' gym doing separate cardio, strength training and flexibility exercises then that's awesome! The idea here is that if you want to do all three at once in around 30 minutes then that's what Curves offers. In addition the clubs are all small, friendly and welcoming and offer a very different experience to the traditional gym - I know all the members on my shifts by name, we encourage laugher and interaction during the workout and we currently have an age range of 15-74!!
Finally, I will admit that we do seem to have a large number of newspaper/magazine offers and it's not always easy to be aware of all of the ones running at any one time - please bear with us, we are only human - persist and take the magazine offer with you.
Apologies if some of this has sounded like an advert but I love my job and my club :j0 -
The opening hours of curves gyms are a bit odd. The one I go to closes for lunch between 2pm and 3.30pm (so I can't go after work while the kids are still at school) and doesn't open on Sundays and not until 10am on Saturday mornings! This is the main reason why I'm not renewing my membership and also I thought it was a bit 'cliquey' (sp) and the 'workers' were too busy talking to each other to speak to the members. For those of you who can work with the hours the gyms open the workouts are good. Everyone uses the same machines but the harder you work the machines the harder the workout you get.:hello:0

Well, I went along for my 1st session, all went well...... dare I say it I thought it was a bit easy! And it is definitely not like a normal gym.... am not sure if that is good or bad - but could see why my bf mum likes going!
They accepted the voucher no problem though - said that they had heard of them... but mine was the 1st that they had seen...... didnt mention price or joinng fee, so may be in for a huge shock if I decide to join.
They were very flexible and I could just turn up when I liked... so that is good.
I am a bit worried about the staff though, and will ask next time what training they have recieved - the reason being the lady told me that she used to be a member (only 3months) and now she worked there. In my past I have done a lot of the stretching exercises that we did at the end and I felt the way she did them was not right. And for me this isnt a problem, but I would be worried if I had an injury or a problem.
Well i will give it another go tomorrow and see!0 -
Just a reminder that the offer is still valid until tomorrow.
I'm going for my first session tonight, wish me luck - I haven't been to a gym in 5 years!(busy having babies, hence the need for the gym now! :rotfl:)

Do you need the voucher?0

Do you need the voucher?
I gave mine to the girl today though, just to make sure they don't charge me.
So have been for my first session and have to agree it's a bit weird, certainly unlike any other gym I've been to before. Am glad I'm getting this free trial, it will give me a chance to make up my mind about the place.0 -
I have been a few times now..... and think how much you get out of it depends on who has shown you how to use the equipment and the instructor in the middle.
If there is a good instructor, they correct you if you are doing it wrong.
But others dont..... i am not sure what sort of training they have.0
