Is it possible NS&I have sent HMRC the wrong account number?

I telephoned HMRC to check the tax that my parents will be paying on savings interest for 24/25 tax year. They have two savings accounts. The first account checked out ok, we had the same figures (HMRC advisor quoted the bank name and then gave me the last four digits. It turned out the number she quoted me wasn’t the account number but a reference number). However, with the NS&I account the last four digits she quoted me were completely different from the account I opened for them. She wouldn’t go any further and said I needed to call NS&I and check the account number with them. I phoned NS&I and they said it doesn’t match the savings account which I opened for them last May (which I knew). NS&I advised that I write to them asking if my mum has a 2nd profile. I’m assuming that means another account my mum cannot remember having. The problem I have is my mum is adamant she does not have one. Even if there is another account why would it override the new account which has earnt a lot of interest, I am guessing if there is a mystery account it would be pennies. If NS&I send interest details to HMRC, is it possible either organisation may have attached the wrong account number to my mum’s name or do things like that not happen? I am completely perplexed by it all.

Have HMRC even updated everyone's records with all the interest details for 2024/25 yet?

Is it possible the details are the figures reported for 2023/24, which are normally used as the estimate for 2024/25.

Or did you get past that aspect with the HMRC advisor?

I wouldn't have thought so because they had the correct details and amount of interest for the YBS account that they opened roughly the same time as the NS&I one which was May/June 2024.

The hmrc are reliant on the providers giving them the interest information -  I can well imagine that the YBS might provide their information a lot quicker than the NS&I.
