Big chains normally charge about £25 for an eye test, independents are often much more.

Big chains normally do a free contact lens assessment and trial but check if you are signing up to any commitment to buy.

Our local independent has levels of tests and assessments, if you went for the top of both it would charge £425
  • Boots Opticians (who I use) have three levels of eye test, basic is £30, then +£25 and +£50 for extra scans and analysis.

There's a free contact lens check & trial offer, the standard annual CL check costs £50.

I paid £25 at Jimmy Fairly a couple of weeks ago for an eye test. They don't offer contacts though. The eye test is free if you buy specs from them.

I've also had tests in recent years at Cubitts. They charge £40 for a standard test, and £65 for an enhanced test. I've had both types.

The test at Jimmy Fairly was fine, but I preferred the test at Cubitts, so I'll be returning there for tests when I next want one.

I've been to both Specsavers and Vision Express in the last six months (I have a good excuse!) and both charged £25 for the basic test.
£120 seems excessive unless there's something uncommon about your eyes.

  • My last one a couple of months back at Specsavers was £25, they will try and upsell you various add-ons like the health scan of the eye on so on.

If you happen to live near one of the universities that trains optometrists they will have a supervised student clinic where you will get a very thorough  eye test for free.

Be prepared to be there for quite some time!
