Overpaid tax, how/when to get refund?

My son has overpaid tax this month. He had 2 part-time jobs but left the first one at the end of August as he was offered a fulltime contract at the second. He's received a p45 so I've told him to give that to his employer and ask them to get the tax code updated. My question is, what will happen about the overpaid tax - how does he get that back?

His current tax code is S287T - we're in Scotland so I believe it should be amended to S1257L

Thanks, I hope this is enough information

The full time employer would only use a P45 to determine a code at the start of the employment, not when he's already an established employee.

He can update himself through his Personal Tax Account or by calling HMRC...he might be better calling in this instance because of the split allowances for part of the year, they will be able to explain the new code to him.
