MSE News: Council Tax debt collection practices are changing in Wales

Council Tax debt collection in Wales will become less aggressive next year, under new rules announced by the Welsh Government today (Friday 26 September). It's a big win for MoneySavingExpert.com founder Martin Lewis and his charity the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute (MMHPI), who have been campaigning to change the "vicious" existing practices.

Why aren't people struggling to pay bills routinely told about Stepchange?

NB - because only a small percentage I imagine know about such options [not everyone reads MSE info and if they did, when very stressed, it's often impossible to take in and/or take appropriate action - and end up homeless. Shouldn't councils be duty-bound to inform anyone defaulting of this option?

3 posts, sorry! Is there an option to edit posts? It would have prevented the need for a further two in my case!  :D

  • A Welsh Council Tax demand nearly broke me - just divorced, stuck in a house I couldn't afford that took a year to sell, I was faced with a massive council tax bill after missing a payment. My ex had advised the council that he was no longer at the address, and the direct debit was stopped without my knowledge. I had to pay the remainder of the year in full and rely on credit cards until my house sold, which added to the stress and expense of a horrible experience.
