    I acted as nothing other than my dads son 

    I have no link to this whatsoever apart from responding to the letter sent to my mother by sending a copy of his death certificate and then ringing to ask questions 

    Surely by sending a copy of someone’s death certificate this doesn’t make you liable for an overpayment in 2021

    No Your mother is liable for it as she received the money.

    And it may not be a single payment in 2021 - presumably if they did not know your father was dead they kept paying in 2022 23 24 and maybe 25.

    If the total is just over £200 you're going to be looking for a very small sum each year.  But if it is paid once a year you should know when to look each year once you find the first one.  Frankly they could have told you a month in the year when it was paid  It is not always obvious from a bank statement where money has come from.
