Pay Rise Query

Hi there Fabulous Ones

I haven't been on here in some time but wondered if anyone can offer any advice.

Yesterday my Employer (A GP Surgery) told us that we would be getting a 4% pay rise FINALLY!  It has been in the media for some time stating this is the Uplift that GPs have been given to increase the salaries of employees.  However I don't understand as on my letter they have included my PAYE/NI contributions and Pension Contributions as "part of my package".

Can someone please confirm that if you are given a pay rise of X% then this should be added directly to the salary or hourly rate. Not mopped up in the NI increase etc.

I need evidence before I go in all guns blazing. LOl

Thanks

D

Normally when I've had a payrise (not NHS) it's been on the base salary.  So if I was being paid £10,000 and got a 4% payrise that means my base salary would become £10,400.  Then NI & tax & pension would be deducted.

This may be reflected differently if they are using "salary sacrifice" for benefits such as pensions.  The new salary would still be £10,400 but they would then deduct the pension contribution to give the amount they use for tax and NI.

Perhaps the thing to do is to go in and say "I don't understand how you came to these numbers, please explain." And if you are still confused ask them to confirm what your old and new base salary is.   Rather than assume the worst.

not quite sure what the issue is here

yes  your  gross salary includes  your  tax , your employee NI , and your employee Pension contributions , each of which is calcualted as a % of your gross income.

are you in the NHS pension or the the practice make  it's own arrangments  ?  as in the former your gross salary determines oyu employee contributions  where other arrangements will have different set ups
