New To Cancelling D/D and Already Made Mistake - HELP !

The OP may well qualify for a DRO which is free.
The first thing though is to cancel those DDs and then work out a sustainable budget based on their pension incomes.
That may also mean a benefit check in case there are other elements that have not been claimed. Sometimes getting a few pence on one benefit allows the beneficiary to access other benefits, perhaps in kind.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing1 -
Lets see the Statement of Affairs, a joint one for both of you is easiest.
Bankruptcy or a DRO may well be a sensible option to just clear the debts out of the way as, sensibly at your age, you do not care about your credit score.

Thanks RAS and Manyways , but the plan of action we have so far seems the least upsetting to my husband .DRO and Bankruptcy sound official and turn him into a wobbling wreck , bearing in mind , he is already fragile .I know you have sound advice but doing nothing at present is best for us .0

You might want to try asking for debt write off`s due to your husbands medical condition, for his debts at any rate.

That's also an option. Given how long your husband has been unwell and you are on pensions.
Give it a go, but expect that you'll need to go to the ombudsman. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
