Hi there i am not sure if this is such a forum to ask this question or for this kind of help.

Maybe someone knows but when i have google searched i got the answer that what we are being told and expected to do is wrong for out health and safety as well as workplace.

But i am a office cleaner at a factory i have been there for 2 years and was a cleaner at a supermarket before this. i only clean the office side not the factory but i do go into the factory section to do that office in there. but i also have security building to do as well as staff toilets in the office side and kitchen and other rooms and a reception.

Anyway i am pretty fed up of having no cleaning facilities to be able to clean the microfibre re-usable clothes we have to use to clean....red for the toilets, yellow kitchen and blue for everywhere else.

it has been the same where ever i have worked its like...here are re-usable clothes to use but we will not give you the correct equipment to clean the bacteria and mank off them fully more so the toilet ones!

and i am fed up. we are expected to use tap water from a normal kitchen hot tap which is not  enough to kill bacteria let alone from clothes that have wiped p....and s from the toilets!

the 2 factory cleaners have the same issue but worse as those toilets are disgusting.

i do blob a bit of  bleach which going by work rules we should not use anyway but they break what rules they want when it suits but this still will not clean them correctly

i searched and everywhere states clothes like this need a proper washing machine and a 60 to 90 wash cycle and actually need to be fully dried in a dryer not left to hang dryer for a few days as bacteria grows and its all getting spread when clothes get used

plus i am the one using it, i wear gloves but you still get splashes and other stuff.

is there anything i can do as its driving me nuts. as all workplaces cleaners are not cared about or giving the correct stuff

hell my cleaning cupboard in the office side is litterally not even 2ft wide but 3-4 ft long and theres 2 electric panels on 1 wall and i have to have buckets of warm water in there with steam and clothes hanging by a old mop pole from 1 wall to the other to dry!

i have to use the small kitchen sink next door for the cloths and yes thats the loo clothes too but they do not think of where i can actually do all this when i have no cleaning facilities

bare in mind this is a big factory lol. the cleaners downstairs are using a disabled loo! which has been badly plumbed with a tap to use but because of inspections they were said to needing to be moved out as i think inspector saw lol but theres nowhere to go and this inspection was ages ago and it seems not its all forgot about

saying all this the company and people are good but theres a big lack of care in certain areas and it is always cleaning areas and cleaners that get it

  • Hi Mark, they either need to give you disposable cloths or let you have appropriate substances to wash the cloths in. It sounds like they want to avoid having to COSHH assess anything.
